Every new year we set the goals to become fit and healthy but at the end of every year. We are the same. Zero changes. And most of the time we contribute the reason for that to be our laziness or lack of self-control.

We never ask, what is the reason behind our lack of self-control? In today’s article. I’ll try to dive in and help you understand the relationship you have with food and how you can change that.

Poor Mental Health

Food often acts as a mode of drug for people with poor mental health. You’ll often notice that when you’re not happy. When you are not enjoying your life. That is the period of your life where you binge eat a lot and gain weight fast.

The reason is the dopamine you get from food. Food often gives you the dopamine hit you need to get into a good mood which often doesn’t last long.

This dopamine hit makes us feel good for short durations. And the dopamine a food gives is directly proportional to the amount of fat it has. It means that the more unhealthy food you eat. The better you feel in the now.

That’s why you’ll often find yourself in the negative cycle of binging on unhealthy food and then feeling bad about it. So, How to solve this? The short-term answer can be: Control your feelings which is a piece of advice that never helps.

The real solution is: Improve your mental health. Focus on Meditating every day. Move your body every day. Journal. Do all the things you can do to improve your mental health. This might not make you feel good in the short term. But in the long term, this will help you establish a good relationship with your food.

Your Relationship With Food

What happened when you were a kid and started crying? Your parents would hand you a chocolate candy or bar to stop your crying. This might seem like a great solution to them.

But this small thing made your relationship with food worse. Your mind started equating food with feeling good. Your mind started understanding that when you’re sad or not happy, you should eat food and you’ll feel good.

And when you turned an adult this behaviour still holds true which made you feel good but feel bad in the long turn.

So, What can be done? Since this is a deep-rooted belief in you. It would take some time for you to get over this. It would take a conscious effort from your side to change the relationship you have with food. You need to slowly change the equation that you have in your mind that

Eat food = Feel Good ❌ to

Eat food = Stay Healthy ✅

Change the relationship you have with food and improve your mental health and slowly (magically) you’ll start losing weight. You’ll start reducing your body fat percentage.
