How To Remember Everything You Read
You’re going to read a lot of articles titled, “How To Remember Everything You Read”. And you might learn a lot. But I won’t tell you to do the same, I will suggest you to do something different. Something no one told you before.
If you’re reading self-help books. Forget about Remembering anything. Forget about remember a word, quote or idea from any self-help book because you don’t need to.
I idea of remembering what you read, has been instilled in your brain by the education system. You have spent 19–20 years in the education system where you needed to spend hours memorizing facts that can be easily found on the internet.
And you think about remembering what you read because this idea has been in your brain since childhood and that makes you think that you need to remember everything you read in a book to actually apply it in real life.
But that isn’t the case. Your brain isn’t made to remember. It’s made to connect. Have you ever had aha moment when a lesson from one book connects with another lesson from another book?
If you have, I’d like to ask you did you remember the first idea? If your answer is a big “NO”. You’ll understand where I’m getting at here.
You Automatically Remember
Your brain. Automatically remembers every idea, advice and quote that has the potential to make a deep impact on you. Your brain is designed in a manner to automatically do it.
And it remember only a very few significant information, so that it can connect that idea with any other ideas it might learn in the future. And when it does, BOOM!!! Neurons fire everywhere and you form a new theory of your own.
Take Searchable Notes
The second biggest reason not to remember what you read is because everything you want to learn and have learnt is on the internet. You don’t need to remember anything now. And that is a good thing as well as a bad thing.
It makes you lazy moron who doesn’t uses his brain at all but it also makes you a crazy genius who is well adapt with connecting different ideas and making a new one.
So, Take searchable note in Notion. You can connect this note taking system with the action taking framework I wrote a few articles ago and make a Weekly Recap on Notion which is obviously searchable.
You can always go back to this database if you need any idea or maybe you want to revisit the book. It is always a good idea to take searchable notes and maybe they can help someone else too in the future.
So, That being said. “Never Remember What You Read”.
