How To Focus While Reading Books
You might have heard quotes like this:
An average CEO reads a book a week
90% of Billionaires are Readers
And it sparked your interest in reading more and more books but you struggle. You struggle even read for 5 to 10 minutes. Which kind of pisses you off because you know you should be reading but somehow you feel unable to read books.
Let me tell you why. 100% of people struggle to focus while reading because they are not Mindful. Instagram Reels, TikTok and YouTube Shorts have reduced your attention span to only 3 seconds.
Just imagine, You have become such a retarded person that you can only hold attention for only 3 seconds. And the truth is it’s not your fault, they are addicting because they are designed in a way to exploit your low attention span to their advantage.
So, Are you helpless? In my opinion, you’re not. In this article, I will be talking about 2 ways that will help improve your focus and if you miss the 2nd one you’ll never be able to master the art of focus. So, let’s get started with:
1. Watch Long Form Content
It might sound obvious but ditch Instagram and TikTok. They are designed specially to keep you hooked, as a business they don’t care about your focus or your attention span. They only want your attention to generate more revenue.
So, Delete your Instagram and TikTok account and focus on YouTube. And NO, say NO to YouTube shorts. Watch long form content without pausing in the middle. Find a YouTuber who makes long form podcast type videos without much edits and start watching them without pausing the video.
What it will do is it will start to rewire your short attention span brain to focus for longer time. At first this is going to be difficult, you won’t be able to watch long form videos. You will constantly have the urge to ditch that video and go to another video but don’t.
You’re facing withdrawal symptoms. Just like any addict will if you take their source of addiction. You’ll also get symptoms of withdrawal like constant anxiousness, restlessness and urge to go back to the source of addiction.
But if you have already deleted Instagram and TikTok and pair this with the 2nd solution that I’ll be talking about in a few seconds you’ll slowly but surely be able to rewire your brain to actually enjoy the long form content.
A few YouTubers, I’ll suggest watching is: 1stMan, Hamza, Andrew Huberman, Deep Dive With Ali Abdaal, Figuring Out with Raj Shamani and Ankur Warikoo.
2. Mindfulness Meditation
Don’t tell me you didn’t see it coming. You saw it right? Mindfulness is the single pillar you need to master if you want to focus on Reading Books. And no matter how much you’d like to deny it. You think that meditation is good for you but somehow you even struggle to meditate daily and that is because of 2 reasons:
- It’s Boring
Let’s address the first point. It’s fucking boring. It’s boring like hell. Your mind is designed to always stay active during your waking hours so it’s obvious that you’ll face discomfort and boredom while meditating.
Just remember that boredom is only for the initial few days and it will pass but if you don’t master meditation now. You will always be a retarded person who will have an attention span of only 3 seconds.
- You Can’t Visually See Results
We humans are visual animals. We believe something to be true if we see it by our eyes aka visually. But you can’t visually see your focus improve or your attention span improve, which makes you think that you are not improving at all and since progress is what inspires and motivates us, you stop doing the activity because you don’t see results.
And the only thing, I can advice you is: Just Show Up. Just show up to the practice. Just show up everyday. Focus about results, you’ll never be able to see it. But something will change you within 2 months aka 60 Days.
You will no longer feel the urge to check Instagram or TikTok you’ll be able focus while watching a 1 Hour Long Video on YouTube and surprisingly you would be able to finish a book in 1 sitting.
Surprisingly, Just the habit of 10 minutes of meditation everyday will significantly improve your life and will also help you achieve your goal of being able to focus on Reading a Book.
