How To Deal With Negative Comments
A really interesting thing happened last week. I posted a post on Instagram stating the value of taking action over reading books. And that post got more than 100+ hate comments.
People started calling me things like bullshit, non-sense, a waste of time and what not. But I’m grateful this happened, I learnt a lot of lessons because of this and I want to share the same with you.
1. Notice Your Mistakes
Most of the times when content creators get hate comments they tend to state the person is at fault and never look for feedback in those comments. But sometimes looking for feedback in the storm of hate comments can lead to self-growth.
I sacrificed clarity for creativity. In order to make the post creative, I sacrificed clarity of the message I wanted to convey which is what led to a lot of misunderstanding and people started hating me for it.
Does it mean, One shouldn’t be creative? No. Creativity and Clarity should go hand in hand. The biggest lesson I learned from this incident is: Never sacrifice clarity for Creativity.
2. Ignore The Urge To Reply
Sometimes some comments will hurt you and you need to accept the fact that you’re human too and it’s okay to hurt and have rage. But don’t reply to a single comment as it will lead to even bigger consequences.
I ignored all comments and never replied to even a single one. But one comment triggered me and I gave a reply. Guess what? Did the person change his opinion? No. Instead he started arguing with me.
And it’s never a good choice to argue on the internet with people you don’t even know.
3. People Are Weird
We always tend to put people in brackets. This person is good, that person is bad. This person is dumb, that person is smart. Whereas in reality, people are weird.
It’s impossible to predict what their behaviour is going to be and you can only guess why the other person did what they did. And assumption is a very big cardinal sin.
So, Just accept the fact that people are weird and you can never predict their behaviour and that’s that. Stop assuming and messing your own head.
4. Confirmation Bias
Just because a message contradicts what you belive in doesn’t makes it a bad advice. And that’s a mistake many people make. They attach ego to an idea and if any other message contradicts that idea, then that message is bullshit.
Don’t be like them. Get the ability to judge the idea for the idea itself. What does the ideas actually mean? Will it be good for me to act on this idea? What are it’s pros and cons?
If you journal and think objectively about the ideas that contradict your current beliefs then it will ultimate lead to growth.
In the end, If you are a content creator. You need to “Have The Courage To Be Disliked”. If you don’t have that, don’t come to the content game.
